1.Movie Review – Lou (2022)

Directed by Anna Foerster.Starring Allison Janney, Jurnee Smollett, Logan Marshall-Green, Ridley Asha Bateman, Greyston Holt, Matt Craven, Toby Levins, Marci T. House, and Jaycie Dotin.

A storm rages. A young girl is kidnapped. Her mother teams up with the mysterious woman next door to pursue the kidnapper, a journey that tests their limits and exposes shocking secrets from their pasts.

Add Allison Janney to the growing list of older but capable action stars. A debut directorial effort from Anna Foerster, based on a story from Maggie Cohn, who wrote the script alongside Jack Stanley, Lou opens with the eponymous older woman penning a suicide note filled with regrets while leaving behind some cash for an unknown character. With a shotgun locked and loaded, pressed against her temple, the filmmakers rewind time to that morning, which follows Lou and the remote island town preparing for an impending catastrophic storm (one that will shut down all transportation coming in and out.

The day also reveals that Lou takes place during the Reagan administration (briefly mentioned on television screens to explain away a lack of modern technology once the proceedings shift into a thrilling cat and mouse game), but what sticks out most is Allison Janney’s cold and steely tough persona; she’s particularly skilled at tracking and hunting (partnering up with her dog Jax), even when conversing with a young woman and her daughter about upcoming rent.

That woman is Hannah (Jurnee Smollett), who is trying to keep her young daughter Vee (Ridley Asha Bateman) hidden from an abusive Special Forces demolition expert ex-boyfriend (a man that she doesn’t believe for a second is dead, despite what she is told), a complete psychopath played by Logan Marshall-Green.

For Lou’s alienating antisocial behavior and payment strictness, there’s also a visible sense of softness and pained remorse underneath that rocky exterior and a desire to open up about something important or say something kind, but without the courage or ability to find the words to do so. Nevertheless, once the evil man fueled by rage locates and kidnaps Vee, that protective instinct is triggered; moments before attempting suicide, Lou has been granted an admittedly cliché shot at redemption.

There is no denying that Lou is pulling from the action movie playbook while also inserting a preposterous reveal halfway through that threatens to strike down every bit of goodwill like relentless lightning. However, such familiarity turns out to be mostly irrelevant since the filmmakers are so competent and assured in execution, receiving a boost from committed performances and excellent photography from Michael McDonough embracing the harsh environmental elements (touched up by some impressive visual effects).

Instead, Lou functions like satisfying trash, partly because the film is interested in trying to say something about motherhood and stubborn lone wolf behavior with its revelations. It’s nothing profound, but that’s also not necessary, given the satisfying bombastic material.

Lou is wise enough to realize that this is Allison Janney’s show, utilizing her survivalist resources and hardened combat abilities to hang with generic henchmen in brutal brawls, cleverly making use of their surroundings. That’s not to say Jurnee Smollett doesn’t also get a chance to impress with physicality, as they both appear as if they have gone through hell and back during their trek across the jungle during endangering weather.

There’s a sequence involving a wooden bridge knocked sideways that they must hang off and shimmy across, showcasing some creative thought went into these set pieces, as does a stunningly shot hand-to-hand final battle set against a beach’s crashing waves. It’s easy to get swept up in such exhilarating action scenes, striking photography, and a conflicted yet fierce turn from Allison Janney, even if the story and revelations are silly.

The Batman, dir. Matt Reeves

The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson has thus far been my favorite movie of 2022. This film has had the attention of everyone since the announcement of his casting, but what I anticipated more than Rob was Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman in Matt Reeve’s version of Gotham City. Zoe truly ate that role up. Her performance on screen was captivating and powerful, and the costumes were different and refreshing and complimented Kravitz and her regular style well. We love to see the Batman & Catwoman duo make a return to the big screens. It is a nice change to see the addition of more women leads to the DC Universe, especially after Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. However, this film is a long watch — about three hours to be exact — but is worth every second.  

NOPE, dir. Jordan Peele

The film NOPE directed by the oh-so-infamous Jordan Peele takes an unconventional approach to horror films today. Starring Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun, and our childhood favorite Keke Palmer as Emerald Haywood, Peele’s NOPE is a tantalizingly creepy mixed bag of a sci-fi thriller that plays on our fear and amazement of UFOs. It keeps us shivering for a while, and although the film is horror Keke keeps it fun throughout. I don’t want to say too much to spoil the thriller but just know you’re truly in for a ride — especially if you aren’t familiar with the cosmic horror genre. 

Don’t Worry Darling, dir. Olivia Wilde

As the only film in this list directed by a woman, Don't Worry Darling by Olivia Wilde comes in at number three. This film hits when you ignore the Rotten Tomatoes rating of 30% from critics and the negative attention from all the drama surrounding the work triangle between Miss Flo, Harry, and Olivia Wilde. Don’t Worry Darling is a surprisingly gripping movie and keeps you on your toes to the end. The film takes place in the 1950s, where we explore the life of Alice Chambers, as she unravels the ugly truth of living in paradise with her husband Jack played by Harry Styles. Miss Flo does a great job again in another film and I am definitely going to see this again before it leaves theatres. Go watch it now!

The Gray Man, dir. The Russo Brothers

Netflix dropped the best action movie of Summer 2022 with The Gray Man. starring Hollywood’s most popular actors, such as Ana de Armas, Ryan Gosling, and Chris Evans, this movie is an epic espionage thriller. Heartthrob Gosling plays Sierra Six, the CIA's top asset — whose identity is known to no one. The best part of the film is the fighting duo between Sierra Six and Ana de Armas' character agent Dani Miranda. This movie is by far action-packed and will leave you waiting for the sequel.

​​The Gray Man is an action-packed engaging film that gives a lot of excitement right from the start thanks to fantastic cinematography and soundtrack, a great narrative, and a talented cast.

Thor: Love & Thunder, dir. Taiki Waititi

In this fourth installment of the franchise, Chris Hemsworth plays Mighty Thor yet again as he returns to the life of being a hero after the events of Avengers: Endgame. In this space adventure spectacle, Thor sets out with the Guardians of the Galaxy on a spiritual journey of purpose, love, and loss. The fourth installment of the Thor series takes a wild ride with a very special return of Natalie Portman, as she comes back to play Jane Foster. She takes the lead in this movie as the new Lady Thor in this action-packed film. With a star-studded cast of Christain Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, and more, it’s fun and light-hearted. However, it comes in last as it's truly only a watch for when there’s nothing else on streaming platforms.

3.The 7 Best New Movies on Netflix in September 2022

Fall is almost, which means that spooky season is also just around the corner.

And while we’ve got a couple of good Halloween-adjacent options for our September rundown, there are plenty of other great movies hitting Netflix this month, including a bunch of original films that look absolutely incredible — including a long-in-the-works Marilyn Monroe biopic and the new film from French director Romain Gavras.

So whether you want to revisit a cult favorite (“Road House”), watch two of your favorite TV stars team up in a movie (“Do Revenge”) or enjoy one of the odder films in the grand Adam Sandler catalog (“Little Nicky”), there’s something for everybody on the streaming service this month.

“Road House”

Jake Gyllenhaal recently shared a photo from the first day of photography on his “Road House” remake with director Doug Liman. While waiting for that film to drop next year, why not revisit the original? If, by some cosmic fluke you have never seen “Road House,” it’s time to change that. Simply put, it is a kitsch masterpiece. Patrick Swayze, at his dreamiest, plays Dalton, who is hired by a rowdy roadside bar to be a “cooler;” his main job is to temper the establishment’s violent outbursts, make friends with the rougher clientele and to make sure everybody has a good time. Easier said than done. Especially when he gets entangled with a smalltown hood (played, with scenery-chewing aplomb, by a clearly slumming Ben Gazzara). It would be easy to write off “Road House” as nonsense, were it not for the pedigree behind and in front of the camera (including producer Joel Silver, cinematographer Dean Cundey and sturdy character actors like Sam Elliott and Kevin Tighe) and fact that it is relentlessly entertaining.

“Do Revenge”

This looks delightful! A super bitchy, high school-set variation on Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train,” in “Do Revenge” Camila Mendes (from “Riverdale”) and Maya Hawke (from “Stranger Things”) play picked-on high schoolers who make a pact to go after each other’s bullies. (They have very, very bad exes.) The trailer for “Do Revenge” is killer (it helps that it’s soundtracked by Mazie’s great “Dumb Dumb”), suggesting a razor-sharp, R-rated high school thriller along the lines of “Jennifer’s Body” or “Heathers.” (Bonus cool points for Este Haim co-composing the soundtrack.) And with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, co-writer of this summer’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” co-writing and directing “Do Revenge,” you can bet it’s going to be laugh-out-loud funny. Put it on your to-do list.

“Athena”

The son of director Costa-Gavras (“Z,” “State of Siege”), Romain Gavras has grown from a music video wunderkind (with his memorable clips for artists like M.I.A. and Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne project) to one of international cinema’s most exciting modern filmmakers while holding firm to those pop sensibilities (he always has the coolest artists contribute to his scores). 2018’s “The World is Yours” felt like the filmmaker reaching a new plateau; it felt wholly original while still acknowledging its forebearers (the title is a reference to “Scarface”). It was one of the best films of that year but was unceremoniously dumped on Netflix. Hopefully, the same fate doesn’t await “Athena.” While the logline and early marketing materials err on the side of the nebulous (“Hours after the tragic death of their youngest brother in unexplained circumstances, three siblings have their lives thrown into chaos”) but early word is that his scope has widened and his political edge sharpened. It’s not just one of the most anticipated movies of September – it’s one of the most anticipated movies of this year.

“Lou”

If you had “Allison Janney killing a guy with an empty can of soup” on your 2022 bingo card, congrats! “Lou” is the movie for you! In the 1980s Pacific Northwest, Jurnee Smollett (from “Lovecraft Country”) plays a single mom who teams up with Janney to find her kidnapped daughter, who has been taken by her estranged husband (Logan Marshall-Green). Together they seek out some very bad dudes. The trailer makes the movie looks like some gender-flipped, “John Wick”-adjacent fun but there’s some meat on “Lou’s” bones. J.J. Abrams produced the movie, and you know he loves a good mystery. Come to see Janney beat the hell out of dudes, stay for something altogether more intriguing.

“Blonde”

A glitzy Netflix biopic of Marilyn Monroe sounds straightforward right? Well, not so fast. “Blonde,” adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name by Australian writer/director Andrew Dominik, is so provocative that the Motion Picture Associate gave it an NC-17 rating, a rating meant for explicitly adult material that has become synonymous with the X-ratings fancied by pornographers and grindhouse theaters. (It joins the ranks of “Showgirls,” “Blue is the Warmest Color,” Pedro Almodovar’s “Bad Education” and standup specials from Martin Lawrence and Andrew “Dice” Clay.) “Blonde” stars Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, with Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller and Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio. Dominik’s close collaborators Nick Cave and Warren Ellis provide the movie’s score. Dominik hasn’t directed a narrative feature since “Killing Them Softly” which came out an entire decade ago. It’s been too long. Bring on the controversy.

“The Munsters”

Whew boy. Few trailers have generated the kind of discussion that the spot for Rob Zombie’s “The Munsters” did when it debuted online earlier this year. And honestly, that trailer was bizarre and wonky, but given Zombie’s history as an adventurous and highly literate filmmaker, we’re hoping for the best here. “The Munsters” is based on the goofy, monster-themed sitcom that ran on NBC in the 1960s. If the trailer is truthful, Zombie has maintained a lot of that series’ kitschy aesthetic, serving as something of a prequel to the original show. While the cast isn’t exactly inspiring (it includes a bunch of Zombie regulars, including Jeff Daniel Phillips, Sheri Moon Zombie, Daniel Roebuck and Richard Blake), the idea of the director of “The Devil’s Rejects” taking on such an agreeably campy property certainly is.

“Little Nicky”

Yes, “Hubie Halloween” (made for Netflix) is Adam Sandler’s spooky season crowning achievement (it will be an even more essential re-watch this year to honor fallen co-star Ray Liotta), but we should forget Sandler’s earlier attempt to mix scares and laughs – “Little Nicky.” Arguably the most bizarre movie that Sandler has ever starred in he plays Little Nicky, the youngest son of Satan (played by Harvey Keitel). Little Nicky, who has a slicked-down hairstyle and talks out of the side of his mouth, travels to New York City, falls in love with Patricia Arquette and seeks to prevent his brothers (Tiny Lester and Rhys Ifans) from causing too much trouble. This movie really has it all – a talking dog (voiced by Robert Smigel, obviously), an incredibly grating Quentin Tarantino cameo, a cast that somehow includes Rodney Dangerfield, Ozzy Osbourne and Reese Witherspoon, and some pretty impressive make-up effects. Is “Little Nicky” for everybody? Absolutely not. But if you can get on its particular wavelength, it’s a ton of fun.

1.Every Movie Coming to Netflix Through 2022: The Full List

Netflix has revealed release dates for the rest of the year's movies, including Knives Out 2 and Pinocchio.

Netflix drops some of its biggest titles towards the end of the year, starting with Ana De Armas as Marilyn Monroe in controversial biopic Blonde. Huge sequels include Enola Holmes 2 and a streaming debut for Knives Out 2, officially titled Glass Onion. Heading into the holidays, big family titles include a film of Roald Dahl's Matilda: The Musical and Guillermo Del Toro's stop motion Pinocchio (not to be confused with Disney's live action reboot with Tom Hanks).

Other intriguing flicks include White Noise, in which Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig survive the apocalypse and director Alejandro González Iñárritu's Bardo. Look out too for Jason Momoa in a live action imagining of pioneering comic Slumberland and a new version of classic war story All Quiet on the Western Front.

Oh, and if you're making plans for next year, Netflix has confirmed Christian Bale period detective drama Pale Blue Eye will be released in January.

2.Chiranjeevi and Salman Khan come together for ‘Thaar Maar’ in Godfather; song to release on September 15

Whether it is for the salt pepper look of Chiranjeevi or because it will feature two megastars of Indian cinema- Chiranjeevi and Salman Khan for the first time, Godfather has garnered massive curiousity. The collaboration of the two megastars is expected to set the box office on fire. While it was being said Salman will be playing pivotal role in the film, we also heard that he will be doing a dance number with the South megastar. Now, audiences have gotten a glimpse of it as the makers of Godfather shared the promo of the peppy number 'Thaar Maar Thakkar Maar'.

Earlier today, Chiranjeevi’s production Konidela Productions shared a video promo of the song, 'Thaar Maar Thakkar Maar' on Instagram. The music of the track gives a fun-peppy feel to it and is expected to be a treat for dance lovers. Speaking about the song, a source close to the film said, “They are expected to create mega mass destruction together with their mass dance moves. We won’t be able to blink our eyes from start to end because that’s the kind of magic we are expecting this track to create.”

“In fact, fans will be excited to not just see Chiranjeevi and Salman Khan together on screen but also dressed in identical costumes. They will also be sporting black shades in the number to add style quotient to their overall look. S Thaman has come up with a superb mass dance number. The hook step is sure to delight the masses. Prabhu Deva master has choreographed the song in a huge set,” the source added.

The song is sung by Shreya Ghoshal whereas Anantha Sriram has penned the lyrics. The full song is expected to hit the tube on September 15.

As for the film, Godfather is directed by Mohan Raja and it also stars Nayanthara, Satya Dev, Sunil, and Samuthirakani in key roles. RB Choudary and NV Prasad have mounted the movie grandly under Konidela Productions and Super Good Films banners, while Konidela Surekha will present it. Godfather is scheduled for a grand release in Telugu and Hindi during Dussehra, on October 5.

3.Emmy nominations 2022 - the full list

The Emmy 2022 nominations have been announced.

This year’s Emmys, awarding the best in television, will take place on Monday 12 September at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and the race is wide open considering typical nominees, including The Crown and The Handmaid’s Tale, are not eligible.

The reasoning for this is due to a new eligibility period meaning shows had to air their most recent seasons between 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2022.

TV shows in the running for awards this year include Better Call Saul, Succession and Squid Game in the drama categories, and Abbott Elementary, Hacks and Ted Lasso in the comedy categories.

Hundreds of films have created magical adventures through road trips, Atithi Bhooto Bhava is just dreary, observes Deepa Gahlot.

The leading man of Hardik Gajjar's Atithi Bhooto Bhava is a stand-up comedian, but his jokes don't always land.

The situation is pretty much like the film, which had rom-com potential, but lost its way.

To begin with, is the old-fashioned title, which gives away the plot of the film and is not even catchy.

Shrikant (Pratik Gandhi) is in a live-in relationship with air hostess Netra (Sharmin Segal) but their day starts with squabbles over little things.

She thinks he does not care enough, he is baffled by her crabbiness.

And then, there is the ancient chestnut -- he forgets her birthday. Which is almost impossible in the social media age.

After drinking his woes away with fellow comedian, Suchi (Divinaa Thackur), when he is staggering back from the pub, a Sikh man latches on to him.

Maakhan Singh (Jackie Shroff) calls him 'Daarjee' (grandfather), and claims to be the ghost of Shrikant's grandson from an earlier birth. He parks himself in his home, watching Singh Is King at full volume!

How does one evict an intruder nobody else can see or hear?

A film with a bigger budget would have used some nifty special effects for comic effect.

This one has to make do with Shrikant's annoyed expression and the ghost's unreasonable demands.

Shrikant, Netra and Suchi have to embark on a road trip to Mathura on Maakhan's insistence because he wants to see Manju, the love of his life. (Don't ghosts have the ability to zoom through the ether or something?)

Hundreds of films have created magical adventures through road trips, Atithi Bhooto Bhava is just dreary.

It picks up almost towards the end, and has at a few emotional moments and a predictable feel good ending.

The film coasts along on Jackie Shroff's sparkling screen presence.

The younger actors could take a few tips from him on how to turn on the charm.

That's the essential fuel for rom-coms.

Pratik Gandhi‘s ‘Srikant’ (aka Sri) is an annoying a**hole who has taken his 4-year-relationship with Sharmin Segal’s ‘Netra’ for granted & roams around like he’s Ricky Gervais’ Tony from After Life. Sri is a standup comedian, and Netra is an air hostess (only and only to support one joke) & they both can neither fly away from each other nor laugh all out.

After fighting for some non-existent (just like the story of this film) issues, Sri decides to drink extra ending up seeing a ghost who introduces himself as his grandson Makhan Singh (Jackie Shroff). Yep, Sri meets his grandson from the previous life as a ghost who wants to reunite with his old love Manju & with this wants to teach his grandad how pure love is.

If you’ve two characters: one is young & dumb, another is old & wise, you use your elderly character to narrate his love story from the past to make the lad realise what is missing in life without love, you might create one of the most loved rom-coms of our era with Love Aaj Kal. But, if you’re someone who takes the above equation, and makes the old guy not only a ghost but also the young guy’s grandson from previous his life to make the lad understand the same thing, then my friend, you should stop your chain of thought right there and cross-check if you’re thinking straight.

But, that didn’t happen and here we are getting such a story from Shreyes Anil Lowlekar, Pradeep Srivastava and Aniket Wakchaure which lacks ‘Love, Aaj & Kal’. The story doesn’t get absurd by every minute, it gets all weird at once & then it carries on to be the same till the last minute without any revival. Madhu Vannier’s camerawork follows every basic trick in the book to keep things simple, which isn’t a bad thing at all amid all the chaos that’s happening in the story & execution department.

Atithi Bhooto Bhava Movie Review: Star Performance

Back in 2020, Pratik Gandhi caught everyone’s attention by doing the biggest scam of his life (Scam 1992) & cut to 2022, he’s at the receiving end of what should be called as the biggest cinematic scam when it comes to stealing entertainment. This is exactly what happens with talented actors like him, in the start, when they decide to make their presence felt in the industry without really being much there (in terms of quality content). This should have been a no-go for someone as good as him from the scripting stage itself. He still chose to do it, tried & failed.

It’s always good to see Jackie Shroff doing movies & being a livewire at the age of 65, but projects like this don’t fit in the blueprint of how would he really want to treat his second innings to be. Rishi Kapoor did that brilliantly & I feel Jackie dada should observe the same following films which would only bring out the best in him.

Post Malaal, I had great hopes from Sharmin Segal but this film doesn’t even come close to what she could do. Her debut teased her calibre, wanted her to exponentially blow it up in her second film but neah, this ain’t that. Divinaa Thackur lends her hand which ain’t really helpful in the supporting cast. Blame it on the script because all the above actors could do very well when placed in a good film.

The story started with its lead Sri flaunting his ‘MCP’ traits & then the director Hardik Gajjar tried to give the film a Seinfeld-like vibe with its central character being a comedian who does stand-up pieces about his life & I was totally up with the idea until I realised there’s ‘Bhooto’ (from the title) yet to be introduced. Hardik’s direction isn’t really much of a problem compared to the mess made by the story department. With his skills, Hardik can supervise a good film but not with this kind of script.

Songs are s*it, background score leaves no impact.

Atithi Bhooto Bhava Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, the makers thought this would be a fun experimental horredy, but it’s neither fun nor experimenting with anything horror or comedy. A lame & easy-to-avoid attempt!

Babli Bouncer: Tamannaah Bhatia reveals she wants to be the bouncer for Hrithik Roshan and Vicky Kaushal 

Tamannaah Bhatia will be seen collaborating with realistic filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar for an interesting project. The film is a fun ride and tells the tale of a female bouncer. Essaying a rather unique role, the Himmatwala actress spoke about choosing this unconventional character during the trailer launch of Babli Bouncer. In the same, when the actress was asked about someone she would like to play bouncer to, in real life, she responded with the name of Hrithik Roshan and Vicky Kaushal. Babli Bouncer trailer: Tamannaah Bhatia packs a punch as she becomes bouncer from bodybuilder. Watch 

The trailer of Babli Bouncer featuring actor Tamannaah Bhatia in the lead role was released on Monday. Taking to its YouTube channel, Disney+ Hotstar shared the over two-minute-long trailer which showed Tamannaah's journey from a bodybuilder in Fatehpur Beri to a bouncer at a Delhi club. (Also Read | Tamannaah takes off her shoes on stage to light up lamp, impressed fans say she learnt it in South India) In the trailer, Saurabh Shukla praises his daughter Tamannaah (Babli) who he says 'can lift heavier weights than any other builder in the gym' while her mother Supriya Shukla taunts her not for being able to make round chapatis. Focussed on making a career in Delhi and becoming independent, Tamannaah's character refuses to marry Abhishek Bajaj's character in the trailer. After one of her colleagues in the gym offers her the job of a lady bouncer, Tamannaah accepts it. As the trailer proceeds, Tamannaah reveals that she promised her father not to beat anyone up. However, she is seen beating up goons and kidnappers on the streets. Babli Bouncer is scheduled to release on September 23 on Disney+ Hotstar in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, the film stars Tamannaah, Saurabh Shukla, Abhishek Bajaj and Sahil Vaid. Ranveer Singh promotes Babli Bouncer; says he feels protected with Tamannaah Bhatia 

Known for fun and enthusiasm, Ranveer Singh never leaves an opportunity to support his colleagues. In a recent video, the Simmba actor is seen extending his support to the forthcoming film Babli Bouncer. The trailer of the film was recently launched by the film’s director Madhur Bhandarkar along with leading lady Tamannaah Bhatia. In the video, Ranveer was seen promoting the film as he revealed how protected he feels around his Babli Bouncer.

 Singh saying, “Main bahut excited hoon Babli Bouncer ke liye. Aaj main bahut protected feel kar raha hoon kyunki meri Babli Bouncer yahan hai aur woh meri ifazat karegi, hai na Babli? (I am very excited for Babli Bouncer. I am feeling very protected today because my Babli Bouncer is here and she will protect me from everything. Wouldn’t you Babli?” While Madhur Bhandarkar agreed with Ranveer, Tamannaah responded to it adding, “Poori jee jaan se ifazat karungi. (Of course, I will protect with my all my life.)” Speaking of Babli Bouncer, the film features Tamannaah Bhatia in the titular role and she will be seen in the role of a bouncer for the first time. 1. Cuttputlli Movie

CUTTPUTLLI is the story of a cop trying to catch a serial killer. Arjan Sethi (Akshay Kumar), 36, is based in Parwanoo, Himachal Pradesh. He has passionately researched about serial killers and he wants to make a film on this topic. He approaches several Punjabi filmmakers in Chandigarh. However, all...&nbspof them decline his idea and instead, advise him to make a comedy. He then goes to Kasuali to meet his sister Seema (Hrishitaa Bhatt), brother-in-law Narinder Singh (Chandrachur Singh) and niece Payal (Renaye Tejani) on Raksha Bandhan. Narinder is a cop and he insists that Arjan should give up his filmmaking dreams and join the police force.

Arjan and Seema’s father is a deceased cop and hence, he’ll easily get a chance to become one. Realizing that his aim to make a serial killer film is not getting fulfilled, Arjan agrees. He becomes a Sub-inspector and joins a police station where the SHO is Gudiya Parmar (Sargun Mehta). A few days later, the cops get the information that a schoolgirl named Amrita Rana (Saina Anarose) has gone missing. She was presumably abducted from outside her house. The killer leaves behind a gift box which has the mutilated head of a doll. Arjan realizes that the way the doll’s head is mutilated is very similar to how the face of a girl named Samiksha Bharti was mutilated. This girl was found murdered in Parwanoo and Arjan had gathered information about her out of habit. He tells SHO Parmar that the Parwanoo schoolgirl killer has kidnapped Amrita. Parmar dismisses his theory.

A few minutes later, the cops get a call that Amrita’s body has been found near a railway track. The cops now take Arjan seriously as they realize that a serial killer is on the loose and is looking for his next target. Some days later, a third girl, Komal (Laaibah Ali), goes missing. Thanks to Divya (Rakul Preet Singh), a teacher at Komal’s school, Arjan finds out that Komal was seen hailing an auto. Arjan hunts down the auto-rickshaw. The driver blurts out that he didn’t kill Komal and that he took her to the house of Purshottam Tomar (Sujith Shanker), who happens to be the maths teacher in Payal’s school. Pushottam is nabbed and it comes to light that he sexually harasses his students. However, Purshottam denies killing Komal though the evidence is against him. While Purshottam is in custody, the killer strikes again. This time, he abducts none other than Payal. And like every time, he leaves behind the box containing the mutilated doll’s head. The killer usually kills the victim two days after the kidnapping. Arjan now has 48 hours to find the serial killer before he fatally harms Payal. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

2. Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Cuttputlli’ on Hulu, a Strangely Hilarious and Violent Hindi Serial Killer Thriller

Now on Hulu, loony serial-killer thriller Cuttputlli (translation: Puppet) is a Hindi-language remake of the 2018 Tamil/Kollywood film Ratsasan (translation: Demon), about a wannabe filmmaker who becomes a cop and ends up tracking a series of gruesome murders. “Loony” doesn’t even begin to describe Cuttputlli, which smooshes together tones and genres willy-nilly and throws in a bonkers musical-dance sequence at the halfway point, a component of Indian cinema I’m not sure I’ll ever acclimate to (which might be a good thing). Love or hate this movie, you can’t say it isn’t entertaining.

The Gist: Arjan Sethi (Akshay Kumar) has a Wall o’ Serial Killers in his apartment. You know – news clippings, photos and artifacts of brutality that no sane person would want to see first thing and last thing every day. His latest addition to the lovely murder collage is an article about a teenage girl’s slaying, complete with a photo of the corpse’s face, slashed up with an eye gouged out. Can they even put photos like that in newspapers? Jeezoman. Oof. There’s a good reason for Arjan’s obsession: He’s written a thriller screenplay and is shopping it around to producers. One wants him to rewrite it as a comedy. Another says, “Let’s avoid the murder angle. Why don’t you add some wholesome family emotion?” and Arjan immediately gets up and walks out. As he should.

With his filmmaking prospects quickly fading and his bank account dwindling, Arjan decides to follow in his late father’s footsteps and become a cop in the mountain town of Kasauli. He participates in a montage where he runs and jumps on obstacle courses and whatnot, followed by a graduation ceremony. His first day on the job, he’s ordered to use a baton to beat a confession out of a suspect, and is chastised by his boss (Sargun Mehta) when he acts like a normal compassionate human being and blanches at such sadistic violence. Meanwhile, we see a teenage girl lured to a person in a blue van. She’s SNATCH’D and in her stead is a gift box with a doll’s head inside, its face cut up and its eye gouged out.

Hmm. Are you connecting the dots here? Arjan definitely is, but the other cops aren’t – other cops who haven’t spent years staring at pictures of mutilated bodies and memorizing John Wayne Gacy’s favorite snack foods or whatever. So Arjan is outed as an expert on relevant subject matter, and goes from being a total wuss who won’t even torture people to the lead inspector on a high-profile serial killer case. Arjan isn’t a total weirdo, however – we see him bend over to tie a pregnant woman’s shoelace, like a total sweetheart. He also dotes on his niece, and through her he meets Divya (Rakul Preet Singh), a real looker of a schoolteacher who inspires slo-mo shots and rom-com music right smack in the middle of a movie about gruesome slaughter and the unknowable dark nature of humanity. Meanwhile, Arjan’s niece ends up in a different school with a math teacher who’s quite the ultracreep, a real bag of donkey turds who physically and psychologically abuses his students. Could he be the serial killer? NO SPOILERS.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Cuttputlli is like Seven (or maybe more accurately a second/third-tier 1990s thriller like The Bone Collector or Kiss the Girls) if it was a Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker production. Call it The Kentucky Fried Serial Killer Movie!

Performance Worth Watching: Kumar is a Hindi-film veteran who does his best with a bland character and jumps through this screenplay’s increasingly ludicrous hoops like a true pro.

Memorable Dialogue: This is what passes for flirtatious dialogue in Cuttputlli (although there might be something lost in translation):

Arjan: Can I get you a drink? Soft drink?

Divya: I don’t drink soft.

Sex and Skin: None.

Our Take: Considering how the Arjan character is given dubious “advice” about inserting comedy and family-friendly crud into his hardcore-murder movie script and then finds himself in a movie with comedy and family-friendly crud haphazardly crammed into it, I’m not 100 percent certain Cuttputlli isn’t a full-on spoof of the serial-killer genre. It’s all but impossible to take seriously, evident by: The comical idiocy of the police. The musical sequence that makes Kumar look like Pitbull. The towering pile of plot contrivances. The OTT-absurd killer, who makes a Scooby-Doo villain look like Norman Bates. The big final chase and confrontation, which reaches a level of hysteria that must be the result of derangement, genius or a combination of both.

Whether the comedy is intentional or not is beside the point. Laughter is inevitable. The plot is chock-full of twists and red herrings, all telegraphed way ahead of time. The film’s portrayal of violence is so bizarre – grisly closeups of maimed children, casual police brutality, Arjan kicking a suspect in the testicles over and over and over again – it’s either cluelessly tasteless or deeply parodic. Is Cuttputlli a satire of police ineptitude? Our fascination with violence and exploitation in movies? A weary and worn-out genre? It has to be. Has to be.

Our Call: STREAM IT. Intent is wholly beside the point – Cuttputlli is weird and outrageous.

It stars Akshay Kumar, Rakul Preet Singh, Chandrachur Singh, Sujith Shankar, Sargun Mehta, among others. The film is a crime thriller where Akshay plays a cop on a hunt of a serial killer.
